Planning on hiring home care services for a loved one? If so, there are plenty of options from which you can choose. You can hire an in home care provider that you found through a classified advertisement. You could also contact a number of agencies that serve the area and have them assign a caregiver for your elderly loved one. You could also rely on home care referral services.
While you would be able to find an ideal caregiver for your loved one through any of these options, agencies offer some of the best protection against certain workers. This is due to the fact that while many states don’t have basic requirements, agencies understand that it’s their primary job to ensure the safety of the patients in their care. That means they often conduct extensive interviews, check out references, and do background checks as well.
No matter what option you choose to find the right in-home care provider for your loved one, there are a number of questions that you should be sure to ask during the interview. Here we highlight three key questions that you should ask when you sit down and interview the prospective caregiver.
- What are the requirements that an agency uses when hiring their caregivers? This should give you some insight into what they look for and whether their requirements would be in line with your own. It should also provide you with some insight into the level of experience (if any) that is needed in order to work at that agency.
- What happens if you (or your elderly loved one, the patient) isn’t happy with the in-home care provider? Is there any type of recourse for you and your loved one? Would you be able to request a different caregiver for your loved one? If so, how would that process work?
- What type of background checks do they perform when hiring caregivers? Don’t expect to be privileged to see information about any particular in-home care provider’s background as that is personal and private information. However, you should know whether criminal and other background checks are performed. If they don’t do any vetting of candidates like this, determine whether you can trust the potential caregiver with your loved one.
When you’re hiring home care services, make sure that you ask questions, either of the candidate or the agency. It’s how you can help ensure that your loved one gets the best possible care.
