A Family Caregiver Who’s Feeling Rundown Will Benefit from Professional Elder Care Services

By Patrick Philbrick-Director on Jun 22, 2015 3:31:02 PM

It’s easy to feel rundown and fatigued when trying to take care of an elderly loved one. For Melanie, supporting her aging mother wasn’t something she had planned on, but after she had suffered from astroke, she knew she had to step up. After all, no other family members were going to step up, and she didn’t want her mother to be without the proper level of support when she was

discharged and sent home to recover.

After a while, Melanie began to feel completely worn out and exhausted. She never thought about the prospect of elder care services. She felt this was her responsibility and didn’t want her mother being cared for by a stranger.

After several weeks of stopping by her mother’s house every day after work, preparing meals for her, supporting her with various task around the house, and even driving her to doctor’s appointments, Melanie became ill. She was usually a very healthy person, but because of the stress from the work she was doing, she was getting sick more frequently. Melanie also noticed she had less energy, was more lethargic, and began to withdraw from certain activities she used to enjoy, such as spending time with friends, playing games, and more.

Like Melanie, many family caregivers across the country have a tendency to become overwhelmed with the job. Keep in mind that it is a job, even though you are providing care to a family member. For Melanie, the best solution was to look into home care for the elderly. It took her a while to get to this point, but she knew it would be best for her and, ultimately, her mother. Melanie began to exercising again and spending time with friends. And when she visited her mother, which she often did, their time together was more enjoyable since Melanie didn’t have to focus on getting the laundry done or preparing the meals for the upcoming week.

Family caregivers who are feeling overwhelmed and run down need to take care of themselves. Relying on a professional caregiver can give them enough time off to focus on their own health and well-being.
