Broccoli.2007.jpgFor some people, a big bowl of broccoli is not the first thought that pops into their minds when looking for a snack, but it is a much healthier alternative to, say, a bowl of ice cream and besides, your body will thank you for packing it full of healthy nutrients. This green vegetable is a top superfood called a cruciferous and is part of the cabbage family of veggies that include Brussel sprouts, cauliflower and Kale.

Broccoli is most nutritional when eaten raw since cooking and processing kills some of the antioxidants. However, cooked broccoli is still nutrient dense and is probably a little easier for senior teeth to chew. A serving of broccoli contains about 50 calories, less than 1 gram of fat, very low carbs and sodium and is filled with Vitamin A, Calcium, Vitamin B-6, Vitamin D, fiber and a large amount of Vitamin C. In fact, broccoli contains twice the amount of Vitamin C than one orange. Some of the other possible benefits of broccoli include:

  • Helps prevent Arthritis and Osteoarthritis due to its sulfur-rich compound (called sulforaphane) which can help prevent damage to cartilage and keep bones strong.
  • This cruciferous is also a cancer-fighting food. Researchers have found that broccoli has been shown to kill cancer stem cells and can protect the body from cancer-causing chemicals. It’s also been shown that the components of broccoli can act like an antioxidant in the body. Another study discovered that with four servings of broccoli a week, a man could lower his risk for prostate cancer.
  • Broccoli may significantly lower blood pressure, reduce your chances of Diabetes, improve your kidney function, help your immune system and with its antioxidants, give a boost to helping you fight the effects of old age.
  • This superfood can also help your body’s detoxification process, act as an anti-inflammatory, keep your allergies at bay, help with digestion, and is a heart healthy vegetable that contains lutein, which can help keep your arteries from thickening.
  • Broccoli looks like trees. Even though that’s a fun children’s way of looking at this food, next time you serve it try standing up some of the stalks for a visual effect.

The benefits to broccoli are endless and there are many different ways to eat it. Fresh and raw is the best way but it can also be lightly steamed or added to salads, or included in recipes.
