Caregiver in Sacramento, CA: Seniors Can Enjoy Skin Care, Too
Betty had always taken good care of herself. Any time that she went out in the sun, she wore sunscreen. She used anti-wrinkle creams and other moisturizers on a consistent basis throughout her life. As a result, she had very good skin. Even though she requires a caregiver to assist her at home, that doesn’t mean she has given up on her positive skin care.
Just because someone is in their late 70s or even in their 80s and relies on home care providers, that doesn’t mean that they have to give up on any aspect of their personal care. In fact, the more attention that someone pays to their skin and the health of their body, the better it is going to be for them in their overall health in the long run.
If you are a caregiver, don’t take this aspect of their health lightly. It may not make sense to you, especially if the patient is not going out in public very often, but it is important to the elderly individual.
September is National Skin Care Awareness Month and just because someone is relying on a home care provider, that doesn’t mean that they can’t also enjoy healthy looking and feeling skin.
What to know about proper skincare.
Every person is different in their body’s needs are going to vary. An elderly individual is going to have more issues with wrinkles and blemishes on their skin. Aside from plastic surgery, there isn’t much that someone can do to stop wrinkles from appearing on the skin completely. Yet there are ointments and creams that can be used to help minimize these wrinkles.
Wrinkles are caused by the process of the skin cells dying and drying off. Keeping them moist will slow down the wrinkling process. A person who has been taking care of their skin for a long time will generally have much better looking skin than someone who spent the vast majority of their life tanning in salons or under the sun, or smoking.
A person who smokes will generally have a leathery skin texture. Drinking the right beverages, such as fruit drinks, can also provide benefit for proper skincare. There are certain supplements that boast benefits for proper skincare, but you would want to make sure that the elderly patient has checked with his or her doctor about the supplements they are considering taking. The supplements may not react well with various prescription medications that they are currently taking.
As their caregiver, if the senior is focused on proper skincare, you might be able to learn something as well for yourself.
