Springtime is when pollen is most severe. Pollen is that fine white powdery substance that comes off of trees and flowers as northern climates begin to transition from winters gray to summers green. Pollen
can affect any part of the country, and it can be far more severe in certain regions, depending on the type of winter it was, the amount of snow cover the area experienced, overall temperatures, and much more. Usually, when winter is harsh, when there is a lot of snow and it covers the ground for a significant part of the winter season, pollen is going to be much more severe.

Pet dander is another potential allergen that can be found on most animals. Cats and dogs are common pets in the United States and somebody who is allergic to pet dander may find it almost impossible to even go into the same home were a cat or dog lives. Some people have such severe allergic reactions to pet dander that they can react when standing a few feet away from somebody who has pet fur on their clothing. For seniors who may be dealing with various allergies, proper home care can help them alleviate those significant symptoms and also bring them a higher quality of life.

Cleaning is essential.

For an elderly individual who is experiencing balance related issues, less strength, and can’t maintain their home environment the way they used to, this can increase the risk of certain allergies. During the spring, it’s a good idea to keep the windows closed during those few weeks when the pollen is at its most severe. It’s tempting to open the windows and allow fresh air in, but that pollen could be seriously problematic for the elderly individual.

For somebody who is unable to clean properly, they may rely on family members, friends, and even neighbors to help out once in a while. An experienced in-home care provider hired through a local agency could offer the assistance the elderly individual needs to keep their home clean and healthy.

HEPA filters.

HEPA filters are great consideration and can be placed in just about any room in the house to help filter out the air and remove a majority of the allergens, including pollen and pet dander, that can affect a senior’s health. Central air-conditioning systems and window units may also have options for HEPA filters. Use them if they are available and this will improve the care for the senior at home.
