Home Care in Sacramento CA

care-after-hospitalization.jpgAs the leading cause of death globally, research is proving that this is a behavioral problem rather than a genetic one. And an overwhelming stream of research is pointing to what we put in our mouths as being the main culprit. “It’s not your fault,” Says Dr. Hyman, “it’s that we’ve been lied to for decades about what constitutes a healthy diet and what is and isn’t good for us.

90% of the illness and debilitating disease we see in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities can be prevented and a lot of it reversed. Coronary Artery disease, Congestive Heart Failure, Atherosclerosis, Edema, Acute Myocardial Infarction…just a few of the maladies that are preventable and often even reversible.

All we’ve heard for the last few decades is we need to cut out the fat. This is a myth. In fact, the right kind of fats are not only good for you, they are necessary for proper cardiovascular health, for brain and nerve function, for regulation of blood sugar, and a myriad of other necessary systems in the body. We’re talking mostly about vegetable fats from sources like avocados, coconut oil, olive oil, and meats and nuts rich in Omega 3 fatty acids.

The biggest culprits in our diet these days are simple carbohydrates: sugar (in all its forms), flour, potatoes rice. Foods like bread, crackers, pasta, deserts all contain these simple carbohydrates which are poisoning us. But you might say” I love my brownies, or pasta, or bread…whatever you favorite simple carb is, but in fact you don’t love it, your ADDICTED to it. Studies done with brain scans clearly show that sugar is 8 times more addictive than cocaine! In fact, when cocaine addicted mice are given a choice between cocaine and sugar water, they chose the sugar every time.

The insidious problem with simple carbs is that they get absorbed immediately into the bloodstream, bypassing most of the digestive system, spike our blood sugar, setting off an insulin response. We have an immediate burst of energy and a “bliss point” reaction, followed by fatigue and sluggishness as the insulin kicks in. The insulin prevents the cells from utilizing the sugar, leaving an unhealthy level of blood sugar in the system. The liver then has to convert the excess sugar to fat, leading to high triglycerides and cholesterol levels. The result is fat accumulating around the mid-section and being deposited in the form of plague into our arteries. This is how we are creating our own cardiovascular disease in ever increasing epidemic proportions.

Not only have I seen the massive new research to back this up, in my own life I adopted this “Paleo” style diet, promoted by Dr. Hyman, and saw my cardiovascular age drop from 65 to 49 in a 6 month period: I gained 16 years on my life just by changing what I put in my mouth! The plague that was beginning to accumulate in my Coratid Arteries was reversed and has almost completely disappeared.
