Lincoln, CA - Talking To Dad About Home Care

Life brings us many challenges, and having to talk to Right.jpg dad about home care may be one of them. Your father may have been strong and independent for most of his life, taking care of the home, family, and heavily involved in the community. However, the older he gets, the more he is struggling with day-to-day tasks and personal care. While it may be difficult to talk to your Dad about home care, there are a few points you should make in the conversation:

  • He will remain independent in his home. Stress the word independent, as this often alleviates some of the anxiety in seniors.
  • Note that this is not a statement about his inabilities and abilities. Focus on what he can do with the help of home care, such as spend more time with friends and working on hobbies or projects he enjoys.
  • If he is struggling with mobility issues and perhaps has a history of falling, talk about how the provider can help him get around the house and assist him with errands.
  • Providers can help with meal preparation and help with various household chores.

Understand the needs of your father and that this transition may be difficult for him. While you understand the advantages of hiring a home care agency, he may see it as losing independence. Start the conversation slowly and have all the information available so that you can answer any questions. Help him find out more about home care services and how they can help him remain independent.
