For seniors, technology often has a negative connotation. As more and more technological advances have been released in recent years, the learning curve has only increased. Often times, technology and seniors using it has a negative connotation. However, there are exceptions to that rule. In fact, researchers have recently begun exploring how virtual reality can be used to help seniors live and cope with diseases or other health problems. They found a variety of differing results for many different conditions.
Increased Brain Plasticity
Researchers in Israel decided to investigate how virtual reality could be used to help people with Parkinson’s disease. Through their experiment, they discovered that combining specially-tailored exercises on a treadmill with a virtual reality session could affect the brain’s activity and increase the adaptability of neuronal networks. This in turn, improves brain function.
Denmark researchers explored the possibility of using virtual reality therapy to improve movement in arms and hands after a stroke has caused brain damage. They found the virtual reality treatment to be as effective as traditional therapy. The researchers even report that their study shows some stroke patients in the future may be able to utilize virtual reality to do therapy at home, therefore eliminating having to travel to a medical facility for treatment.
Virtual reality is showing promise in other areas as well. A Spain-based team of researchers have found that immersive virtual reality therapy can assist people struggling with depression, by reducing their self-criticism and increasing their ability to express more compassion for themselves. A study out of California indicates that virtual reality treatment could significantly ease pain when people are in the hospital. Finally, Swiss scientists observed that virtual reality therapy can be used to combat phantom body pain for paraplegics.
